ATD, page 302, 3rd paragraph

Hello, I'm new here. If anybody can offer their insight on the following
excerpt from Against The Day, I'd be very grateful.

"Pandemonium did not begin to amount to a patch on what seemed to be
approaching them instead of they it, swelling to surround them, a
valley-wide symphony of gunshots, screaming, blaring on musical
instruments..."

Specifically the first segment. In what way does pandemonium (chaos,
disorder) "patch" things?
