There was a, I just happened to cave in front of the tube the other day,
oddly famished, gobbling hummus, and came across Colbert.  He was doing
this bit on the Portugal last second draw.  Everybody is aware there is
some sort of weirdly excited awareness and overenthusiasm about the World
Cup, way out of bounds from previous, whatever every forth years are
called.  There was a cam on a packed bar, Americans, who don't give a flat
fuck about soccer, cheering because the Them told them to, going Apeshit as
the final seconds were winding down to glorious USA winnings.  Leaping,
hopping, screaming.

Then just silence.  Instant.  There was NO reaction.  They just went dead,
instant zombies.  Then one dude changed the rotation of his American flag
sweeping through the victorious air and swooped down into repeated beatings
upon the barroom floor.  All in silence.

Beat, beat, beat.
