I am reading it. Like the " return of ' repressed' realism". With
such a work, I looked for "the thinking" , the insight ( into his
life, others') that would raise it above journalistic autobiography.
( See the long dissent in the most recent Nation magazine). I think it
is there in his feelingful perceptions, so to speak. His interesting
emotions color his remembering, his fictional memory.
An early scene struck me as decently symbolic (generalizing w insight)
as well. This is the other necessity ( to me) for making it
universally resonant.
Some are comparing it to Proust's ' autobiographical' novel....but it
seems like 180* from Proust, (or 90* or you know, contra but related)
so to speak. Not recollected to sum up the time of his life as,
ultimately, an aesthetic whole, but put down to show how unaesthetic
his life is. So Far.
