Several of Modiano's novels were translated into Finnish in the 70s and
80s. Then they stopped translating him. I read the books that were
translated by the early 80s. Now I can only remember the permanent haze
of shadowy intimations and fragile clues and memories that in one way or
another prevails in every PM novel read by me. When I entered the
university, I noticed that I wasn't alone, there were other twentyish
readers like me who dug Modiano.
I read (had to check it) Ring Roads, Villa triste (not in English),
Missing Person and Une jeunesse (not in English). If memory serves, none
of those books left me dissatisfied.
