The positions of the Popes, and of American Catholics, is key to
understanding the history of the dismemberment of labor in America.
While so much attention is given to the part played by forces outside
labor, the forces inside labor were far more instrumental to its
dismemberment and demise. The organized Catholics, many of them
anti-communist, played a significant part in the strengthening of
labor, in educating members, communities and families, but also played
a significant role in the internal power struggles and dismemberment
of labor. Of course, outside forces include both government and
industry, and the shift from and industrial economy to a service one,
so huge and powerful forces, but it was labor itself that dismembered
labor, and the Catholics had a major hand in it.
