Just three cuts from Wiki here that debunk the claim that our
libraries are not great. Sure, like every other major resource in this
City, the libraries need advocates, and they have them, and the
current mayor and his crew are not about to start razing libraries to
put up unaffordable housing. Jeeez! Just can't please some people no
matter what you give them, for FREE.
Walk into a library in NYC and ask them to order a book they haven't
got, if you can really come up with one, and they will get it for you.
It's that great.
The New York Public Library (NYPL) is a public library system in New
York City. With nearly 53 million items, the New York Public Library
is the second largest public library in the United States (and third
largest in the world), behind only the Library of Congress. It is an
independently managed, nonprofit corporation operating with both
private and public financing. The library has branches in the boroughs
of Manhattan, The Bronx and Staten Island and it has affiliations with
academic and professional libraries in the metropolitan area of New
York State. The City of New York's other two boroughs, Brooklyn and
Queens, are served by the Brooklyn Public Library and the Queens
Borough Public Library, respectively. The branch libraries are open to
the general public and consist of research libraries and circulating
libraries.
The Queens Library (QL), also known as the Queens Borough Public
Library, is the public library for the Borough of Queens and one of
three library systems serving New York City. It is one of the largest
library systems in the world by circulation, having loaned 15.7
million items in the 2014 fiscal year. It was named “2009 Library of
the Year” by Library Journal. According to its website, the library
holds about 7.5 million items, of which 1.4 million are at its central
library in Jamaica, Queens.
The Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) is the public library system of the
borough of Brooklyn in New York City. It is the fifth largest public
library system in the United States. Like the two other public library
systems in New York City, it is an independent nonprofit organization
that is funded by the New York City and State governments, the federal
government, and private donors. In Fiscal Year 2009, Brooklyn Public
Library had the highest program attendance of any public library
system in the United States.
