Pynchon and Chicago

Standard fare, but the Art Institute is terrific. The new Modern Wing is
worth the trip alone, in addition to all the other collections. PLUS they
have, until 10/13, the Magritte Exhibit, which is worth paying extra for.
Couple things:
-I believe the AIC is free to Chicago residents on Thursdays. Which means
long lines and large crowds if you go later in the day, but not so bad as
to diminish the experience, once you finally get in. What you do is you
tell them you're a Chicago resident and they will likely ask for your zip
code. All Chicago zip codes start with 606. Samples: 60643, 60654,
etc. *Sometimes
*they ask to see an ID after this, but often they don't. And just as often,
if you say you forgot your ID (which does happen to us Chicagoans on
occasion) they will send you through.
-A lot of Chicago and suburban libraries have membership passes they will
rent out on a first-come basis. This may require more effort than you're
willing to put in. But the libraries often have passes to other big Chicago
attractions: the Field Museum (which is great, but too bad they're not
still running that exhibit about the cave paintings at Lascaux, man...),
Museum of Science and Industry, etc.
-In the end the AIC and the Magritte exhibit are worth not just visiting
but paying for.
Granted, that's not exactly insider information. Can offer a bit more ideas
if you'd like, but many of these will take the form of pizza comparisons,
restaurants with <$20 entrees, etc.
I've always heard the Baha'i Temple in Wilmette is worth the trip but, in
true local fashion, I haven't made it.
