Ross MacDonald was not as good a writer as Hammett, or even Chandler but good. But what a great plotter. His plots are the best -- no (unexplained) coincidences, everything unlikely, but everything fully resolved and logical. I like him a lot. Also was in love with Eudora Welty, and she, it seems, with him.
