Shadow Country is indeed excellent. It was originally a trilogy but Matthiessen worked it into one volume for a 2008 novel and it won the ???? national book award. Based on historical events and characters.

Shadow Country is a fictional account of the Florida frontier in the early 1900's, and is his own reworking of three books which had been published separately at the request or demand of his publishers.
