Not really P; map, the territory, on the road, America

Early in Rachel Kushner's The Flamethrowers, Chap 2 entitled 'Spiritual America"
a character wants to "move across the map of Nevada [in a Moto Valera] that was
taped to my gas tank as I moved across the actual state"....."the
faster I went the more connected I felt to the map".
I suggest remembering the cycle across the desert scene in The Master,
where Phoenix never stops,
as another example of this trope.
