The NY to West theme I mentioned re Pynchon and Oakley Hall is a theme
in this novel!
"I would move to NY City."......"Which was an irony because the artist
himself had gone from NY to [she was lover and being mentored] the
West to make his specifically Western dreams come true."

A--and, the book is fictionally told in 1976. The narrator is a young
woman, 20s or so and the narrator is telling stories of her recent
youth so, one of her mental obsessions is Nixon---Pat Nixon!

and some great writing about the race car driver Flip Farmer's out of
control ride and near death [in 1965] which leads her to talk about
his subsequent autobiography in which his garage may have been torched
during the Watts riots which hold equal weight with, say, rain in his
story, she says. This or that inconvenience.
