Re-reading now, the Spy Vs. Spy works. Read the pages on Amin again, where
the "blowback" (47) on the KGB, is a comic madness. The KGB spreads rumor
that Amin is a CIA agent, then comes to believe that he is. He is not.
Never was or would be. It blows up in their faces.

The CIA weak and ineffectual, and in Near East Division, and Afghanistan
nearly non-existant,  meanwhile, is stirring up the only Cold Warrior in
Carter's earshot, Brzezinski, who manages to get a tiny budget of
non-lethal aid, but the only Afghan CIA are busy hunting down equipment
manuals and trying to turn somebody, anybody. Ignorance of the people and
their motives is common on both cold war nations, but the Soviets are in up
to their chins while the US still hasn't got a toe in the water.

Cockburn is full of shit, I say, See Gates, cited by Coll and countless
other excellent sources.
