Austra and the sisters Vroom

No reason it can’t be both historical fiction and a romance (in the broad literary sense of the term).  It’s also post-modern parody, a comic novel.  Books that are one genre only tend toward the formulaic, just mo.  

And about Austra - I think Mason’s declining the opportunity is totally in keeping with his character what with Rebekah’s death and his continuing grief (on into a bit of morbidity).  He’s kind of willing to have sex with her,  but not without love - Austra’s style of approach is just far too far afield from what he’s known.  Mason seems to me to be the moral agnostic while Dixon is more of an amoral Quaker (if we want to speak of “types").
