Of possible interest to the geographically minded, here's a 1785 map of
Cape Town:

Very much a colonial grid. The green rectangular plots stretching from the
middle down to the bottom of the image are the V.O.C. gardens (still
there). Malay quarter, or Bo-Kaap, mentioned on p.82 - 'a protruded tongue
of little streets askew to the Dutch grid' - is in the general vicinity of
the two plots in red at upper left, but I don't think it's reflected in the
plan. On the map, off the map.
Modern city has retained a lot of the original arrangement:
