Forget about alligators...

NP: As a teenager I had a summer job at ANCO on Varick St. The American
News Co ran not only newsstands, but also the old "syrup + carbonated water
in a cup" vending machines on subway platforms. The machines were brought
in for cleaning and maintenance: all stainless steel inside, but inevitable
syrup spills and leaks attracted insects and debris, congealing into a
horrible thick scum. They gave me gloves, a heavy apron, a high pressure
live-steam gun and 5 minutes' instruction. OSHA would have a fit today --
quite rightly -- but I escaped major burns and really enjoyed how swiftly
and completely the steam melted all the crud away.
