Becky cited that graph with Gravity......and, yes, Pynchon found lotsa
resonances with that scientific concept, I think. As Seriousness; as
the earnest anti-human seriousness
that almost destroyed the world--and still could. Gravity, a quality of
honor? (in the military, diplomatic sense) which he also skewers in
Against the Day.
And he uses 'mass' in the science and the pop culture way in AtD, at least, as I
remember.
Science has conceptual metaphors and overarching symbols for him
everywhere. We know.
