Not sure how Bleeding Edge is a California book, though it has much in
common with the other California Dickstories--Lot49, IV. I exclude VL
because VL is closer to "historiographic metafiction", to V., GR, M&D, and
AtD, though young Prairie, the "protagonist" and "Dick" in the novel is,
like Oedipa, Maxine, and Larry (aka Doc), more an idea about subversive
film making and television and rich media, and how the past has been
consumed, how the Old Left to New Left Turn, engineered by media, got us
from Nixon to Reagan, then a hard boiled or soft boiled detective, she
still fits the California Dickstory....In any event, conflating Bleeding
Edge, where a very different set of political players than are found in the
California books are given life, not to mention a reprieve from 11
September, other than the paranoia, is so not a California book, not for
anyone who has lived in both states, as Pynchon has, and I have for the
good part of a century.
