There's a melancholy edge to this reference. Hedberg died early,
heroin OD I think. Among the current crop of interesting comedians he
has the status of a Lenny Bruce, Bill Hicks, early Richard Pryor in
terms of someone whose influence is huge but isn't appreciated outside
of the world of comedians themselves. Seriously important figure in
comedy. He was a massively anxious and crowd-shy personality, though.
I think this plugged into his appeal to comedians who are used to
spackling over their own insecurities.
