This kind of criticism drives me crazy. It leaps from the obvious: that
Inherent Vice is comparable to The Big Lebowski – to the ridiculous: that
it's somehow *about* The Big Lebowski. I don't buy it. While watching
Inherent vice I did not once find myself asking how honest it was in its
relationship to The Big Lebowski or for that matter The Long Goodbye.

Does anyone wonder whether Pynchon adequately honors Melville? I hope not.
