A note on M&D group read, and me playing "ketjab".

Hi gang!

I know my period of "leading" the group read was to begin yesterday, but I
had fallen way behind in the group read. This, due to a number of reasons,
including a looming deadline for a piece of freelance reportage that I was
hired to write.

That's out of the way now, and I have been playing "ketjap", racing through
(and loving!) the Transit of Venus section basically in two big gulps. I am
now at the section with Maskelyne on St. Helena, and I'll be all caught up
by tomorrow.

One side-effect of this rapid read-through for me has been to cement my
opinion of M&D as a particularly successful and magnificent piece of
literature. After a bit of a slow start (this is my first read), it has
turned out to be ribald, learn'd, hilarious, moving, instructive and also a
darn good yarn to boot.

In other words: tada-da-da-da, I'm lovin' it.

Back soon with commentary!
Mark T.
