NP, but I beg your indulgence

Congrats, Keith. Getting a grant of any amount is a huge accomplishment. Being a struggling musician/artist/writer is brutal, not only because of the low/no pay, but because you're constantly questioning whether it's worth it (struggling screenwriter here). Getting a grant helps dispel the doubt - at least for a while. Again, congratulations! Just last night, my 27-year-old son, a classical pianist who's trying to eke out a living as an accompanist for opera singers (ergo, he has to live at home with his annoying parents), declared that after this summer, he's going to chuck it all and try to train as a computer code-writer - a job he hears actually pays.

When will you be in NYC? Not too many p-listers live here, but we should try to have a get-together over caffeine or alcohol if your schedule has room.

Today I found out that I got the grant that I applied for(from my local Arts Council) to go to NYC for a few days to study with some of my favorite jazz pianists. They didn't give me the full amount that I asked for, but enough to get me started and help me in my eternal quest to justify my existence...

I'm up for another grant (from the state arts commission) to do some publicity for my solo piano CD and improve my web presence, etc., and I've also applied to them for a fellowship ($5000).

I have some funny stories (or sad, or both, I guess) about living here. I'm tempted to just sit down and write it all down, but I do have children to feed. Think "Jazzoids from Space" and "Taiji Camp Gone Bad".

Speaking of Taiji, I will start a taiji program at the health club, the Life Center, connected to the local hospital system, in the next few months.

Thanks,

kd
