Well first off I have to excuse my bad english to the followers of this group read. I am struggling to communicate rightly. I look up words, think about how to formulate and structure sentences, in addition to try and find the right angle for my thoughts. (Which is why I have resolved in part to using quotes from books that I have). Still, my language skills doesn’t carry my ideas very well, and I am already embarrassingly aware that I am not coming across how I would like to.
Phew, whingeing out of the way...

Please, feel free to start your own posts and carry on discussing stuff from the chapters regardless of the uselessness of my posts. I am greatly excited about the topics these three chapters bring to the forefront. I really liked the article you posted, David, and I also wanted to expand on your feedback.

I did’t say the vatican own it. I said they 'operate’ it.

I was already aware that the vatican own their own telescope at Mt Graham.

I used the word operate, because I thought it was the right one to use. (Norwegian is a language with much fewer words than English, and nuances can be lost. Think Vikings), but what it turned out I wanted to communicate was that the vatican use it to monitor outer space as a part of as consortium - I didn’t previously know this word. ("A consortium is an association <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voluntary_association> of two or more individuals <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Individuals>, companies <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Companies>, organizations <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Organizations> or governments <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Government> (or any combination of these entities) with the objective of participating in a common activity or pooling their resources for achieving a common goal." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consortium <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consortium>))

In the vatican's own words:
"The truth of the matter is that the Vatican Observatory is a member of the Mount Graham International Observatory (MGIO) consortium, together with a number of other institutions from Europe and the USA.» http://vaticanobservatory.org/vo-news/news-archive/98-news-archive/vatican-lucifer/515-vatican-lucifer <http://vaticanobservatory.org/vo-news/news-archive/98-news-archive/vatican-lucifer/515-vatican-lucifer> . This is a link to the Mount Graham website, http://mgio.arizona.edu <http://mgio.arizona.edu/>. It states: «Scientific researchers from around the world make use of MGIO facilities.»

In my original post I wanted to light heartedly point out that top vatican jesuit astronomers like Guy Consolmagno, (who won the Carl Sagan Medal last year: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Sagan_Medal <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Sagan_Medal> , and speaks out on extraterrestrial life, and our «space-brothers"), also does work at MGIO, which also includes a telescope called Lucifer. Currently one of the world's most advanced optical telescopes. The further connection I wanted to make was between astronomical observatories, jesuit astronomers, and CERN.
But to try and stay with the wonder... «did you know?» and «no way!» kind of light heartedness.

What spurred me on in this quest, was p. 192, chapter 19 in M&D:

«Because their Philosophers and ours,» explains Mr. Hailstone, «are all in League, with those in other States of Europe, and the Jesuits too, among them possessing Machines, Powders, Rays, Elixirs and such, none less than remarkable, one, now and then, so daunting that even the Agents of Kings must say their Hands»

Indeed.

I am not familiar with the show. I thought the clip was «sensationalistic» for sure. It wasn’t well researched at all. sorry.

Sorry about long post everybody. I will definitely take Dave’s feedback to heart. More tomorrow, if you don’t mind.
