Another (basic) meaning within CofL49?

In a DEMOCRACY NOW interview for his new book below,
Return to Sender: Unanswered Letters to the President, 2001-2015--Pub 4/7/15

Ralph Nader articulates this about letters (in the US): "the most
democratic of ways of communicating; everyone is an equal in
the doing; letters cost the same for all, money buys no influence,
each goes the same route, etc."

And they used to be 'responded to' by our leaders somehow....
but no longer. Lowest responsiveness he has ever seen in his lifetime....


I have thought that Pynchon might have had that democratic way of
a united group of states to communicate with each other---EVERY town
or city of a certain,but small, size--has/had a post office in mind when
he created the alternate postal network as our United States was first
breaking apart (after the Civil War, of course)....postwar First: first in his
lifetime....

In Henry Adams' History of the US, he writes that mail was delivered up to
7 times a day within NYC and Philly (I think)....
