Another Greif review

Never said he can be read as conservative (whatever that is), though
wouldn't discourage you or anyone else from giving it a shot.

My argument is that Pynchon's work is not static and that the Saint Jerome
School of Criticism, as outlined in the famous Foucault "What is an
Author?" essay, wherein he describes the modern critical approach that
fixes an author in one ideology, one style, and rejects books that are said
to be inferior works, or that don't fit a stylistic unity, especially given
the paucity of biographical facts on Pynchon (thus you put, imho, way too
much weight on the tidbit of a conservative school chum), is wrongheaded
and that equating the author with the real writer is not the best method of
discovering how the books work on the issues we discuss and debate. Sure,
the tidbit, the letters, and of course, Pynchon's prose, especially his SL
Introduction can inform our readings of his books and his artistic and
philosophical and political development, but to begin by saying he is a
Lefty and has always been simply doesn't make sense to em and it doesn't
jive with my reading of the books.
