Perusing Chapter 5, "The Age of Survival, 1951-1977", and considering the
ironies in the facts, the decline of UoC, owed in large measure to its
failure to attract high school kids, kids like Pynchon. The reputation of
UoC that P describes in his SL Introduction is collapsing, as the financial
failings, the recruiting failings, and, as P notes, the shift of the Beats
and their fellow wondering scholars take hold.
