Get to Know Your Nobel Favorites

The Nobel Prize for Literature is so heavily politicised that I don't think
they will award it to a European writer for a second consecutive year, much
as I'd like either Kundera or Krasznahorkai to win.

Famous last words, but I think the Philip Roth snub has almost become a
point of honour for the Nobel committee and that they're not going to give
in to him now. I happen to like Roth and think he'd have been a more
deserving laureate than many previous winners, but there are plenty of
other strong candidates (not least TRP) who've been overlooked in that same
period - and the narcissistic machismo of his generation of writers hasn't
been so well received on this side of the Atlantic. Nevertheless, it does
seem somewhat wilful to have ignored to US for so long (Toni Morrison is, I
think, the most recent native literary laureate, and I'm not sure who came
before her).

Anyway, enough of my speculation over a deeply flawed horse trading
ceremony/beauty parade. Adonis it is ...
