BREATHING WHILE SAXOPHONE PLAYING SHOULD BE AN OLYMPIC SPORT

Lots of cool stuff on the list recently...impossible to keep up! My Summer
session Intro to Jazz class at Furman flipped out when I played them a
video of Rahsaan. He was a great musician, with or without the theatrics,
but it was all part of the package.
A few years ago, I was playing at a Jazz Festival in Atlanta, and my friend
introduced me to the drummer Jimmy Hopps, who used to play with Rahsaan.
Jimmy was (is?) a beautiful guy. He had dark skin, long braids, an all
white African style outfit, and a huge smile. He lived on some kind of
commune in Georgia at the time. The first thing he said to me was, "You and
I are the same". Cool guy.
My friend told me that Hopps liked to always play free, and Rahsaan was one
of the pioneers of that. Sometimes Hopps would get excited and start taking
it out, and Rahsaan would turn around and holler, "Not yet, Hopps! I ain't
ready yet!".
