So, Pynchon's "hysterical realism"

It's incredible-- except it isn't --that we've degenerated to the
politicking of the 1800s with know-nothing robber barons campaigning on
xenophobia, misogyny, and idolatrous worship of the Market.  We should
remember, this is the country that considered multiple rapist DC "I am the
law in Indiana" Stephenson all reet.  David Duke wasn't so long ago,
either, but America's memory hole is wide & deep, more like a peat bog 'n
anything: all the petty presumptions & inconsistencies of an incredible,
wondrous continent re-turfed with lies, struggle, ideals & repression, all
suspended like so many torture implements in aspic.  All you have to do...
is reach in... and try not to shudder at what comes to light.
