Letter which accompanied the signed book, "Gravity's Rainbow" (letter
not being offered at this time)
Text of letter:
21 August 1986
Dear Carla Urban,
Thank you for your letter, and pleae excuse my delay in responding.
I would of course be happy to sign some books for your son-- it would
be an honor to help out. He is fortunate to have you as a source of
love and support. People have told me that lymphoma is a tough fight,
and I don't see how it's possible to neglect-- or underestimate-- the
spirit, and the will to prevail. I knew somebody, in fact, with a
similar diagnosis, whose eventual survival depended on just that.
Right now I'm in transit, so the best way to do this is by way of
my agent. The address is
c/o Melanie Jackson Agency
1500 Broadway Suite 2805
New York, New York 10036
With luck, we'll have the books back to you in time for Michael's birthday.
Very best wishes,

Thanks, John Goodricke!
... okay, I'm back in the hospital. + as The Rolling Stones always
say, "this may be the last time," so if anyone wants to make a little
(or even a group one) request on my behalf, it's gone to my liver
(where it was before, nobody wants to know, but I hope to make one
last run on GR as soon as I can locate a copy, somebody brought me the
guide (+ DaVinci' skethchbook, a childhood [of course] hero) , even,
figuring I'd have a use for it, which I hope to, St. Luke's MKE ...

Do thank him for ever any good wishes in advance, WHICH'D BE MUVH
APPRECIATED on their own some, and try not to make it sound like i'll
stalk him (before/after the grave, I had a difficult time stalking my
urinal this morning).
I know I should do this myself, but, would you buy a used car from
this salesman?
And I certainly wouldn't sell it, nor would my heir. It'd go to
someone far more deserving. Maybe just say I' too cheap to shellout
fox an xteenth copy. thay's plausible. I used to give out GR's like
Gideion's BIBLES, lot 49's like New TESTAMENTS. Else it's gonna be
Joe Namath over for dinner every time I Gerri sick (maybe mention
that; he'll get it, all right). Thanks again. i owe you all so
(even you, the other DM), here's to hoping I have @ least one last
project in me.
