Fowler notes that the jigsaw puzzle pieces on Slothrop's desk are all " a microcosmal anticipation"--- or synecdoche in some sense---of what is to be revealed later in the text. 
Anyone want to note and say before I quote more Fowler.  He does love the "poetic resonance"
