I read Buying a Fishing Rod for my Grandfather (short stories) in my
late 20s and didn't really get much from it, but also felt that was my
fault somehow. The mood of the works really stuck with me, and I can
still summon it up 10-15 years later. Actually, I've just pulled it
from the shelf and added it to the pile.

Which, thanks for not asking, currently features:
Out (Natsuo Kirino) - bought a second-hand copy on P-list recommendation
Hard to be a God (Strugatsky brothers) - ditto after loving Roadside Picnic
Anthills of the Savanah (Achebe), The Lives of Animals (Coetzee), No
One Writes to the Colonel (Marquez) - someone left these on a local
public bookshelf for the taking
The Guest Cat (Takashi Hiraide) - this is such a freaking gentle and
heart-etching novella

It's midsummer here and I have a newborn. I'll either get through all
of these or none.
