Davis' Law, entirely unoriginal but first articulated to myself circa age
30 on the occasion of (surprise) a divorce:
"Those things you would most want to tell your younger self are exactly
those things your younger self would not, could not understand."
Later it came up in conversation with my mother. She reminded me of Willie
Briscoe, the housekeeper who'd helped raise my brother and me. One day
Willie had been watching a neighbor parent scolding a child with "You
should know better than that!" Willie said sotto voce to my mother: "You
don't know better 'til you've done worse."
