V is set in the exact mid-fifties. That low dishonest decade as someone
said.
Dark and repressed, Norman Mailer was always saying. When Wilhelm
Reich's attack on repression--that or gone box for example---was a hit.
(more below)
Where the hand jive song was a hit, reprised in that 50's musical, GREASE.

Yo-yoing is one of P's "Seven Types of Ambiguity via Use " metaphors but
the major aspect of meaning might mean Going Nowhere, or Getting Nowhere,
maybe embodied in the subway yo-yoing scenes most. Yo--Yoing
is an up-and-down movement most though.

Rachel Owlglass we see caressing her car like we all know, as Benny tells
us:
"You beautiful stud, I love to touch you". Wha, he thought...."he saw her
left hand snake out
all pale to fondle the gearshift"...."Having just been with Wedge, he got
the connection."
Rachel, who Benny knew only went 'so far' with Duke Wedge in the car--even
Duke
did not jive-talk about getting more.

Rachel who, "at least never called it a Relationship [with Benny]". Rachel
who came to him
like a succubus [Many, including King James, have also correlated the
succubi to wet dreams, or nocturnal emission
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nocturnal_emission>. During the time when
succubus lore was created, any sexual activity that was not purposefully
procreative were considered sinful. The succubi may well have been an
explanation for men who could not control their biological function, yet
wanted to stay faithful to their society]

the Fifties:
When it was still a heavy virtue for women to stay virgins.
In the fifties and surrounding decades, handbooks and other books exploring
..... the pressures to fool around, virginity was still a virtue in the
fifties (Merrill 70)

Masculinity and the Movies in the Fifties Steve Cohan. virginity was at
issue in the culture's overvaluation of the "nice girl."

The world wherein Philip Roth sends a copy of his recent fifties novel
to a grandmother in central Pennsylvania, (with whom he has kept in some
kind of touch)
"the only co-ed at Lehigh when I went who gave me a blow job"
Where the female protagonist of Lisa Alther's KINFLICKS used to milk
her boyfriend into the basement washtubs every make-out session in the
family basement room......
"in NOW MOLLY KNOWS, Garber recaps the sexual codes of the fifties,
carefully orchestrated stages of petting"..."in BLADE OF LIGHT, (1961)
Carpenter's heroine, the most beautiful girl in town, is involved in a
book-length series of quarrels about refusing to have sexual intercourse
which culminates in an accident which leads to her death".
"in THE WATCHMAN, (1961) by Davis Grubb, Jill, nineteen, prides herself on
limiting her sexual experimentation...in LORD LOVE A DUCK (1961) the
heroine 'meets her match" and the relationship is highly erotic but does
not go as far as sexual intercourse"----from a book
on the adolescent novel in America.

so, on page 33 of V, the scene about when Benny passes thru New York, "and
though they only thought about each other at random, *though her yo-yo hand
was busy at other things...*

*Did TRP place some 50s hand jobs here early in V with that phrase? *
