Ignore the pandering title as The New Yorker strives for clickbait--which
title has already been changed from a worse one.

Read it if you have time and interest because it is intelligent
intellectual history, using some recent good books, that offers more
perspective
on some of the deepest of Pynchon's themes. One notion dropped early is the
moral effect in history of science. My superficial understanding of
Rousseau never
encountered that notion.

There are many more, even the meaning of the Enlightenment, seen by some
readers as one of the deepest possible, ambiguity always rules, meanings of
 'the Day"
in Against the Day.

I found this piece good enough to 'study' and, of course, want to read the
books, which is less likely.
