If you've got the 1st edition of Reemtsma's book try to make sense of the
last sentence on p. 147. If the 2nd you could look up if they amended it:
it's the 1st of one of the last paragraphs in the chapter "Siege",
beginning with: "Nicht nur, daß"
Highbrow indeed: the epigraph of the chapter is from Euripides.
