BtZ42 p. 92. 'Why?"

Rumination has happened regarding this scene. Why is it there?
I want to argue that TRP created this as a thematic way of
showing the dependency between the two.

Pointsman *needs *Roger. Pointsman, the pure scientist, works
in a societal void without a statistician like Mexico. Mexico functions
as the helper, the translator, so to speak of the effect, the meanings of
Pointsman's
narrownesses; of Pointsman's attempt at totalization of science.

Mexico is so carefully presented as a guy who wants to believe that
the materialistic explanations of science are NOT ALL there is---that the
World is
not all that is the Case---even though he has had no transcendent(al)
experiences.

Mexico is us, in context. Mexico is American pragmatism, pragmatism as the
effects
of science in action in the world.
