The Pier Falls

Is the title story in a new book by Mark Haddon. Evidently based on a real
event, it is powerful at imagining some happenings ---mostly the how of
deaths--and thoughts of lotsa people as this structure breaks and falls.
The narrator interjects with time of event and number of deaths every so
often, as surprising as some of P's narratorial ways. In itself, as bleak
as anything.

The only larger meaning I can see in it, although I am also reminded of a
favorite old novel,The Bridge of San Louis Rey, is the fall of the crystal
palace beginning of GR. A luxury pier full of happy people strolling, and
simply living, then......
