As we have seen, there are a couple-three zeroes available for consideration. If you think of one zero as the hinge between dreaming and awake, those last questions about the impending missile/death seem to hover in that space, which is then dispelled by actual light and the goings on in the maisonette. If the dreamer of the dark train ride is one of the lost riding alone, here we have wastrels who in each other’s company "look just as rosy as a bunch of Dutch peasants dreaming of their certain resurrection in the next few minutes“. Still, one has the feeling that any one of them could be the occupant of the ghost train in that nightly plunge into the dark. That is the inherent psychological split in Calvinism’s logical appropration of Pauline predetermination.
There is also a juxtoposing of the often abstract but here real force of terror implied by scientific precision long range missiles with the boisterous freedom of these soldiers. Both armies are formed in major ways from a blend of Protestant, Catholic, earthy Peasant, and nationalist cultural forces. This is not just a German-English split but a deeper internal split that is beginning to be elaborated: the control and predictability offered by a mechanized and/or authoritarian world view vs. the dangers and pleasures of freedom often spent on fucking and getting stoned but potentially as sublime as morning light illuminating the world. Both offer a cycle of death and resurrection as does the diurnal turn of the planet, both are embraced by liars and saints, and in many ways both are really part of the same whole. Inasmuch as the zero is also a circle there is no going beyond it.

However, this heterogeneity is sufficient to characterize this classification and to distinguish it from all others, because it is very particular: it is absolute. In all the history of human thought there exists no other example of two categories of things so profoundly differentiated or so radically opposed to one another“ Emile Durkheim, The Elementary Forms of the Religious Life (1915, 1964) 33.
