My father was in the Air Force, and I remember this same kind of scene from
the times I visited his offices or other places on the bases where I grew
up.

It's funny, but I remember an association with a "slothful Tyrone", maybe
1st grade, a young, overweight black kid named Tyrone who was in my class.
He would sleep in class and leave food in his desk, including once a carton
of leftover milk that soured and started to stink up the classroom. The
only reason I can think of that I remember him is that a couple of years
later, back in Georgia, we were driving somewhere in the country and passed
through Tyrone, GA, where my mom said there had reputedly been a haunted
house when she was young. I have a picture of an old, decaying wooden
house, quite vivid. Tyrone, the slothful one from the haunted house....
