A week ago at the Helsinki International Book Fair, the Finnish writer Jari
Tervo (basically a realist spiced w/ modernist techniques) advertized his
new novel. To the readers of Ilta-Sanomat (the leading Finnish tabloid), he
also "recommended the [in Finnish translation] 1000-page novel Gravity's
Rainbow (1973) by the American writer Thomas Pynchon. 'There's no need to
read another book for a long time. It's a magnificent story about just
everything. You need to stay focused, but it is certainly one of the most
tremendous novels of the 20th century.'"
