Perhaps, even though I'm hesitant to make bold and sweeping analogy... But the victory of American Reactionary forces, Demagoguery over Status quo, fear, etc. It's been a while since I've read the novel, but how Roth describes t people seduced by Lindbergh as he would fly from stump to stump, the cult of celebrity... I don't know
