Mead is usually referred to as a philosopher, but what do such nouns matter? (See Wittgenstein and Pynchon's probably affectionate homage) 

Mead's, yes, still underrated work is a stream of pragmatism that flowed to Wittgenstein--thru Ramsey-- and later developmental psychologists and philosophers. 

Consciousness 'playing' with itself happens after consciousness begins in dialogue, is a bit less simplistic if one must simplify.
