I hit the road for several years as a youngster. Folks generally assume I
was Kerouacky, but it was Pirsig who was the spiritual guide of my travels.
I walked miles of backroads and two-lane hiways so I could take in the
flavor of places and think about books I was reading. As the Republic was
my first book purchase, just a few months after dropping out of high
school, it was natural for me to fall into the sentiments of Zen and the
Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. I never bought into machines as he did, and
was never a biker of any sort, really. My biggest bike was a '63 305
Superhawk. The road up from Red Lodge to Silver Gate was among my
favorites, though. I am grateful for the influence.
