Google Alert - Pynchon

Let me just evangelize for *Mumbo Jumbo *as enthusiastically as I can. (I
believe Morris especially would dig this book and the things it entangles,
if he hasn't/you haven't read it.)

There are some spiritual, tonal, thematic resonances between *MJ *and *GR *that
make former worthy of the interest and attention of everyone on this list.
Plus it's fucking great. Radical. Ambitious. Very smart. Has that Pynchon
quality of seeming to stand up on a kind of transtemporal dais and look
at/speak to all of history, even the stuff that happens between pub. date
and reader, that happens in front of pub. date and reader both. Plus it has
not been sufficiently attended to by most of the cultures I've interacted
with. It will endure, I sincerely believe. Also it's not a long book by any
means, so you don't have much excuse.

Some more evangelizing:

*MJ* was given to me by an old teacher, mentor emeritus, friend. Writer (as
he says, in the griotic tradition), prophet, and hoodoo witch doctor Arthur
Rickydoc Flowers. He taught a class--one of the best experiences of my
life--in hoodoo literature. Farther down this what might be a rabbit hole
to some: Arthur's *Another Good Loving Blues *and other titles, Gayl
Jones (*Corregidora
*is a great and short book, almost reminds me of Denis Johnson; *The
Healing*), Patrick Chamoiseau (*Texaco *another big ambitious book for
those of you who might have acquired that taste), Gloria Naylor (*Mama Day*
).

Arthur's also a very powerful storyteller and performer. It's so moving to
see him in person. Experience him in the links below, read his work, demand
he be as in-print as possible.
