In eight lines in Melville's *Clarel, *his long self-divided exploration of
the [necessary, he is sorta always saying ] Civil War
wrapped/counterpointed
in a long anti-war poem,(---an essay tells me)
M alludes to the Pampas as a place symbolizing endless war.
Whoda thunk it?
