Question about Mason and Dixon: Data etc.

Anybody know why some of those particular words are italicized? Data in particular stands out. I imagine it has something to do with Pynchon's philosophy of being of "the flesh but not of the world" which I still don't think I understand completely. Anyone have any thoughts on this?
