The long shots of people staring into (what I assume was) the abyss, reminded me of some similar moments in Barry Lyndon. Eerie movie. Kinda stuck with me for a few days the way There Will Be Blood did.

the kid is American in the movie and his name is Prescott (Bush?)with a British accent. funny about accents: wonder why they decided Irish actor Liam Cunningham would be American and American Robert Patterson would be British

The original title of the Sartre story is L'enfance d'un chef, more boss than leader. (Written 1938, when there was a Leader.)
Lucien drifts into fascism at the end, he looks into a window, sees his face, too pretty, and decides to grow a mustache.

John Paul Sartre wrote a strong short story with that title, published in The Wall and Other Stories in the US at least but IMDB gives no indication it was a source. Guess the title is almost a generic ironic title all depending on the insights and execution. I haven't ever quite forgotten that story because young and eager.

Scott Walker soundtrack, no less. Interesting questions about the fatherhood (both metaphorical and biological) of the nascent fascist.

not sure if this film has been mentioned but worth a look--portrait of a fascist leader as a young boy. notable debut for director with impressive use of music
