I haven’t checked in for a while. The list seems to reflect the general divisions and, (I would argue about the Russia stole our election story), distractions that characterize the current culture wars. I do wish that when a text or live discussion comes up there was more detail in the analysis as befits a literary gathering. I was surprised that my last post, referencing an ex Russian Canadian academic, had started a long thread, but disappointed that there was so little cred given to someone who lived the history and too much of the argument looks more like a product of MSM editorials than informed historical consideration.
One thing that is given virtually no attention in this debate is Russia’s deep wariness of weapons on its borders from the legacy of WW2 where something like 3 out of a hundred Russian males who went to fight returned alive and unwounded.(I’m relying on someone else's numbers and it may be imprecise but the number is very large and left a large scar on the Russian psyche). Despite what Putin critics say, most of his power comes from his widespread popularity. Russians like him because he has brought more stability and prosperity than any leader for generations. No Dave, this is not a fascist state under Putin; there is no widespread scapegoating of any group, no wars of aggression for new territory, regular elections where opposition parties get reasonable numbers, and criticism and debate is evident throughout Russia. They too have the internet.
The west’s chosen leader for Russia was a shitty, stupid drunk, so why should they trust the US as a source of political guidance? Whether Putin killed journalists is a legitimate question. It would be good if there was more effort to confront violence against the outspoken wherever it is. Hundreds of journalists, labor organizers, environmentalists and others are killed every year around the world and the US and US press is friendly to many countries that have the worst records. Some people just ain’t no good no matter what their personal ism or y.
Meanwhile the ‘ intelligence agencies’ and their liars in chief sputter into silence rather than reveal those precious sources and methods, while they scramble to realign around the new capitalist war king and avoid bing fired.

It looks to me like war, advertising, lying, computers for capitalism and oil drilling will be where the T-Rump’s new jobs are. Nothing much new there. Meaner, uglier versions of theft will prevail. Police will shoot more liberally. The majority of americans will make noise, but here is the qustion: will they take their money out of the rapist banks and oil and war industries? Will they go out of their safety zones and talk to the poor about a new deal? Will they kick out the corrupt Democrats and reform the party, or form a new party? Will they find a means of uniting around a sane means to a hopeful future?
