A tract is like an area, a section, a region, a parameter, some type of
focus?  So distracted would be like being out of focus?  Or maybe
off-kilter?  Tractors, tractor beams, attractors, traction.

Whatever the hell "kilter" means.  Oh, it must mean tract.
