One through theme--a metaphysical stream
(a phrase in this novel)---is the character trying to get
to 'the other side". Which mostly seems to mean the breaking
of the deepest habits--of living, of thinking. I am very reminded
of existentialist [Sartre; Camus e.g.] notions throughout. Sartre is
name-checked
at least once and if you know his Nausea, there is a fine extended riff on
the nausea of
the protagonist's life in which he offers "humiliating nausea" as a goal. I
love that.
But, this 'other side' motif always reminds this reader of parts of GR.
Maybe never
a theological/religious implication explored as in GR, but some kind of
secular transcendence constantly explored.
The second section is called From the Other Side.
[our hero is now in Buenos Aires, his home, not Paris any longer]
Section three, called From Diverse Sides is supposedly about
our main character, now "dead" says the text but still interacting as
before--except
for the 'metaphysical stream' he is swimming in, maybe. Lotsa stuff here
about the failure
of typical psychology [in explaining character].
Almost immediately in this section he speaks of having been in four places
at once, which get verbally explored and, again, resonated with me as if
we now could listen to a character like Slothrop--about the
self-scattering.
Irrelevant MISC:
TOGETHER
We are all
In it
Together.
We take
A few shots
And
It will be over.
Don’t worry.
I wouldn’t
Want to be
On the other side
Right now.
Found "poem' of Richard Nixon

But we can't stay but a minute, but will see you on the other side, after
the rain, God willing.
